Celebrating 30 Years of Longford Shopping Centre

Published

on

This month The Longford Centre is celebrating 30 years since it first opened its doors to the shoppers of Longford on Tuesday the 19th of October 1993 and from then on has seen itself continue to be the heart of shopping in Longford town.

Many shoppers will remember that the centre was originally home to the ever popular Quinnsworth, which relocated to the site in ‘93 bringing with it a whole new range of options to customers who would be ‘spoiled’ for choice with top quality products.

The opening of the centre saw the addition of retail stores like Penneys and Glitzi Bitz to the town and the relocation of Paul Byrons who made a move from their existing premises. All stores which remain open in the centre today.

In the thirty years since opening and with the ever changing retail climate, the centre has seen many changes, the addition of Tesco as one of its main anchor stores and in recent years, an extension to the popular Penneys, giving extra shop floor space and expanding the variety of options available to customers.

The centre is also the home to Fresh Today, Lloyds Pharmacy, Trevor Francis hairdressers and Boston Barbers, with a new addition to the centre in recent weeks ‘Wag N Tails’, making themselves at home in the old unit many will remember as Lifestyle sports.

The shopping centre is a hive of activity which frequently sees pop-up stands set up in the centre for shoppers to avail of information and services from outside the town. Most recently The Irish Cancer Society took their ‘Your Health Matters Roadshow’ to the centre, offering Free Health Checks to everyone over 18. Just one of the many events that take place in the centre.

In March 2023, the centre saw the addition of a piano as part of ‘Piano for the People’ which was launched with Longford Arts / Longford County Council. The piano gives locals the opportunity to off show any musical skills they have, whilst providing entertainment for passing shoppers.

To mark 30 years open, the Longford Centre has something exciting lined up to highlight such an incredible milestone. Kicking off on Thursday the 19th of October until Saturday the 21st, the centre will have three fun filled days to mark the occasion.

Centre manager Samuel Byrne has been working behind the scenes to make it an event not to be missed. The full line up of events has yet to be announced, but Samuel is delighted to share that there will be plenty of In-store Promotions and Discounts in select stores over the few days, with a cake cutting on Saturday provided by the wonderful team in O’Hehirs.

As well as that, there will also be the chance to win some great prizes, all sponsored by stores in the centre:

With more ‘surprise’ prizes to be announced on the Centre’s Social Media pages in the lead up to the 3-Day Event.

Raffle tickets are available to purchase 9am-5pm Thursday and Friday, and from 9am-2pm on Saturday, with all proceeds going to a local school.

Samuel urges everyone to check out the centre’s new Facebook page to be the first to know what’s coming in the next few days.
